Spirit Animals: Harmony & Home

Which spirit animal calls to you?

A spirit animal is often described as a guardian, guide, or symbolic companion that reflects the qualities, instincts, and strengths that shape an individual's life journey. The concept is deeply rooted in many indigenous and animist traditions, where humans and the natural world are believed to share a profound spiritual connection.

Traditionally, spirit animals have been associated with creatures such as the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Yet I believe a spirit animal can be any creature that speaks to your soul — an animal whose characteristics, energy, or story resonate with who you are or who you aspire to become.

Before leaving the UK in 2024, I began a collection that is especially close to my heart: Spirit Animals — a celebration of symbolism, nature, and our enduring connection to the animal world.

Now, as I settle into my new studio here in New Zealand, I’m excited to continue growing the collection, just as I always intended. Inspired by the creatures that captivate and guide us, this range of homewares includes cushions and tea towels printed on organic cotton, each featuring original artwork and meaningful symbolism designed to bring beauty, character, and intention into the home.

So far, the collection features three remarkable creatures, each carrying its own unique message.

Flamingo: The Graceful Connector
With their vibrant colour, confident presence, and unmistakable elegance, flamingos embody the art of standing out while remaining deeply connected to their community. These highly social birds remind us that balance can be found even amidst life's chaos and that strength often comes through relationships.

Flamingos are known for their loyalty, frequently forming long-lasting bonds and friendships. As a spirit animal, they encourage us to embrace our individuality while nurturing meaningful connections with those around us. They teach us that grace is not simply about appearance, but about how we move through life with confidence, compassion, and authenticity.

Seahorse: The Gentle Navigator
The seahorse has long been a symbol of strength hidden within gentleness. In Ancient Greek mythology, seahorses were believed to pull the chariot of Poseidon, god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. As his trusted companions, they became symbols of power, protection, and safe passage across uncertain waters.

My interpretation includes a whimsical twist: a unique seahorse-unicorn hybrid that combines the magic of imagination with the mystery of the ocean.

One fascinating detail I love is that the Greek word for seahorse is hippocampus — the same name given to the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Whether by coincidence or design, it feels fitting that this enchanting creature has become associated with wisdom, resilience, and the ability to navigate life's currents with quiet confidence.

Crow: The Spirit Messenger
Few animals carry as much symbolism as the crow. Across many cultures and spiritual traditions, crows are regarded as messengers between worlds, bringing insight, awareness, and transformation.

In shamanic traditions, spirit animals often appear during times of change, offering guidance and support when it is needed most. The crow is perhaps one of the most powerful examples of this role. Intelligent, observant, and adaptable, it reminds us to look beyond the obvious and trust our intuition.

When the crow appears in your life, it can signal a period of personal growth, heightened awareness, and transformation. It encourages us to embrace change rather than fear it, recognising that every ending creates space for a new beginning.

Which Spirit Animal Speaks to You?
As I consider which animals to illustrate next, I often find myself asking the same question I now ask my audience: What animal do you most resonate with?

For me, it has always been sea creatures, particularly turtles and dolphins. I admire their calm wisdom, intuitive nature, and deep connection to the rhythms of the ocean. They remind me to move through life with curiosity, patience, and trust.

The wonderful thing about spirit animals is that there is no right or wrong answer.

Sometimes we are drawn to a creature because it reflects who we already are; other times, it represents qualities we are learning to embrace.

This collection is still growing, and there are many more spirit animals waiting to emerge.

Watch this space for future additions.

In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you:
