The name of this painting ‘Halcyon Days’ came about in the most magical way.
I felt the painting evoked a sense of calm and peace. When searching for relevant titles to fit its mood, I came across the word ‘halcyon’: meaning an “idyllically happy and peaceful time”. Perfect.
Satisfied that this would be the title to fit my painting, I then discovered that an alternative definition of ‘halcyon’ is “a tropical kingfisher with brightly coloured plumage”. A quick internet search led me to discover that the exact kingfisher I had painted was indeed called the 'Halcyon'.
Legend has it that the female kingfisher built a floating nest on the sea during the winter solstice. She calmed the waves and winds to keep her nest safe. Hence the ‘Halcyon Days’.
